Getting a picky child to try new foods can feel like a never-ending challenge. But turning mealtime into something playful is a great way to spark their curiosity and get them interested in trying new things.
When food looks fun, even the fussiest eaters might be tempted to give it a go – a big win for you! Here are some creative ideas to make meals kids will actually enjoy.
Make Faces and Fun Shapes on the Plate
Kids love a bit of play, so why not bring that sense of fun to their plate? Making food more appealing can be as easy as creating little faces or shapes with ingredients. Try cucumber slices as eyes, a tomato slice as a nose and a strip of bell pepper for a smile. You can even mix veggies and fruits to make cute animals, flowers, or sunny scenes.
Tip:
Try making a smiley face on a slice of bread with toppings. Use cucumber or cherry tomatoes for the eyes, a strip of pepper for the mouth and perhaps cheese shreds for hair.
Or, use small cookie cutters to shape bread, fruit, or veggies into stars, hearts and other fun designs.
Bright, Colourful Food Is More Tempting
Colourful meals look more exciting, and for picky eaters, visual appeal can make all the difference. Try adding natural colours wherever possible. Carrot sticks, bell pepper slices, cucumber rounds, sweet corn, blueberries and strawberries bring vibrant colours that make the plate more inviting.

Tip:
Create a rainbow wrap with colourful veggies like cucumber, bell peppers, red cabbage and carrots. Roll them up in a whole-grain tortilla and serve with a favourite dip.
Or, make a fruit bowl with melon chunks, blueberries, grapes and strawberries – the more colours, the better!
Small Portions Are Less Overwhelming
Big portions can feel daunting for fussy eaters. Instead, serve a variety of small bites so they can choose what they want without feeling overwhelmed. Often, having just a few little options can make the meal more approachable.
Tip:
Make a “snack plate” with an assortment of small bites – a few fruit slices, veggie sticks, mini meatballs, or pieces of bread. Or, try small wraps that are easy to grab and enjoy.

Let Kids Join in the Kitchen
Kids are often more open to trying foods they’ve helped prepare. Get them involved in the kitchen and let them have fun creating meals. They can help slice fruits, spread ingredients, or decorate their own sandwiches (with child-friendly tools, of course).
Try setting up a “build-your-own-pizza” station with different toppings so they can design their own mini pizzas. Or make a smoothie station with fruits and berries so they can mix their own colourful drinks.
Keep Mealtimes Relaxed and Fun
Instead of pressuring kids to eat, focus on making mealtimes enjoyable. When children feel relaxed, they’re more likely to explore new foods. Let them eat at their own pace, keeping the experience light and positive. Like this, their interest will grow naturally.

A Bit of Patience Goes a Long Way
Making food fun is a positive way to encourage picky eaters to try new foods, but patience is key. Give them time to explore new tastes without pressure. Most importantly, keep mealtime positive and enjoyable for everyone at the table.
Good luck!
