You’ve got a fresh pack of name labels in your hands — now what? If you’re getting ready to label your child’s clothes, bottles and gear, you might be wondering: Where should the labels go? Can they be used on clothing? How long do they need to set before washing?
We’re here to share simple, practical advice on how to use name labels — so they stay in place, wash after wash (after wash)!
When Should You Use Stick-on Labels?
Our Stick-on Labels work well on most smooth, dry surfaces — like lunch boxes, water bottles, toys, backpacks and even clothing (as long as there’s a care tag inside). Just make sure never to stick them directly onto fabric.
That means you can easily label jackets, hats and indoor clothes — just look for the synthetic care tag inside. For clothing without care tags, like socks or wool garments, we recommend using Iron-on Labels instead.
Before Applying Your Label
- Make sure the surface is clean and dry. If it’s plastic or metal, wipe away any grease or dust first.
- Avoid placing labels on uneven surfaces, zippers or fabric.
- For clothing: check that the care tag is made of synthetic material, not woven or knitted fabric.
While Applying Your Label
- Press the label firmly in place — use your thumb and hold for a few seconds.
- Make sure the entire surface of the label is in full contact with the material.
- Don’t move or reposition the label once applied — this can weaken the adhesive.
- Avoid washing the item for the first 24 hours to allow the adhesive time to fully set.

What About Lunch Boxes and Bottles?
These surfaces often have a bit of grease on them from handling or food. To get the best stick, wash the surface with mild soap and dry thoroughly before applying the label. That way, it’ll last longer — even through countless dishwasher cycles!
When Should You Use Iron-on Labels?
Iron-on Labels are the perfect solution for clothing that doesn’t have a care tag or has a rough fabric surface where Stick-on Labels won’t hold.
They work especially well on:
- Wool items and soft fabrics
- Seamless bodysuits and underwear
- Clothing without tags or with textured fabric
To apply, place the label directly onto the fabric where you’d like it, cover it with parchment or pressing paper and press firmly with a hot iron. Once in place, Iron-on Labels are made to stay put — through washing machines and tumble dryers. They’re strong, long-lasting and super practical when stickers aren’t an option.
What If a Label Comes Loose?
It’s rare, but it can happen — especially if the surface was damp or uneven during application. If it does, simply remove the label, wipe away any adhesive residue and apply a new one on a smoother, clean surface.
Everyday Tips for Easy Labelling
- Keep your labels handy — in the hallway, kitchen or changing bag — so they’re always within reach.
- Consider leaving a small set in your child’s nursery cubby or backpack for last-minute labelling.
- Label new items as soon as you start using them — it’s easy to forget later, and new things tend to disappear first!
- Let your child help choose the design! Kids love picking their own motifs, and it helps them recognise their belongings. A small moment of choice can even make transitions to starting nursery or school feel more comforting and familiar.
